{"id":452,"date":"2011-01-24T19:24:13","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T00:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climaticdesign.net\/?p=452"},"modified":"2023-05-17T10:29:18","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T15:29:18","slug":"how-much-do-you-care-about-energy-and-the-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/climaticdesign.net\/?p=452","title":{"rendered":"How much do you care for the environment?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I believe architects have the most significant role in creation of our built environment. <strong>Ten critical decisions<\/strong> that a design team makes on a project: location of a building on a site, building massing and geometry, orientation, size and location of fenestration, shading devices, thermal properties of the building envelope, natural ventilation, daylighting, and HVAC system all have direct impact to the energy consumption of the building. These decisions are usually associated with human impacts on the environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=86&amp;t=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The building sector alone accounts for<\/strong> <strong>30-40 percent of global energy<\/strong> <strong>use<\/strong><\/a> and over 80 percent of the environmentally harmful emissions from buildings are due to energy consumption during the times when the buildings are in use.<\/p>\n<p>The above-mentioned decisions are only possible if are considered at the beginning of the design process. At the beginning stage of design, do you have enough time and available resources to extract the appropriate information to make correct <strong>design decisions<\/strong> for your projects? Alternatively, do you prefer to get expert advice from a sustainable design consultant? The fact about these design decisions, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecture2030.org\/enews\/news_120810.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Edward Mazria points ou<\/strong>t<\/a>, is that there is not\u00a0any extra\u00a0cost associated with the implementation of these decisions, rather the question is how much will the project save by\u00a0implementing the appropriate Design Decisions!<\/p>\n<p>I have dedicated my professional life researching the effect of climate on architecture and urban design, and I am currently providing services to architectural firms. These ECMs may include some or all of the aforementioned <strong>ten critical decisions<\/strong> to meet the sustainable goal of the project.
