Climatic Design LLC (CDL) has performed a simplified energy model simulation, a comprehensive energy analysis, and an assessment of the building systems and configuration for the E.F. Borgerding District Court (Borgerding DC). In addition, a Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) was performed to identify the best HVAC option based on first cost, maintenance costs, repair costs and energy costs of four HVAC options. Simulation results of the energy models that reflect the aforementioned HVAC options and the LCCA results demonstrate that Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) has the lowest annual energy cost ($38,735), highest initial cost and highest Present Value Life Cycle Cost. Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system with DOAS has the second lower annual energy cost, but it’s Present Value Life Cycle Cost (LCC PV$) is lower than the other options. In addition, VRF system has the highest cumulative Life-Cycle savings or net saving compared to GSHP.
