Climatic Design LLC (CDL) has performed a preliminary energy analysis for the Sandy Spring Friends Upper School Project. This energy analysis was intended to investigate difference in energy performance of SSFUS due to change of its orientation from North/South direction to the Southeast, which will align this building with the buildings located to its west and east side. Based on the simulation results of six modeling scenarios, changing the orientation of the building would have a negative effect on its energy performance; Southeast orientation increases the annual energy consumption of the building. Depending on the thermal performance of the building envelope, efficiency of the HVAC systems and the total window area, the quantity of the additional energy consumption would be from 2% to 8.4% of the annual energy consumption of the building.
